What's in Your Feed?

Just before Christmas, our pastor, Felipe, and I were talking about algorithms. Once the subject of only career mathematicians and computer engineers, they're ubiquitous now. Our social media feeds, website ads and phone notifications are tailored to what posts we like, comment on, or even simply slow down our scroll to view.

In pondering this, you realize that the content delivered to us reflects how we engage with the world. Granted, sometimes we can be manipulated by 'clickbait'—but generally, if you stop your scroll on baby animals, kids saying the darndest things, and military reunions, you're going to see more and more of those uplifting and heartwarming moments.

Of course, the opposite is true: if you stop your scroll on divisive politics, gratuitous images, or sensational headlines—you're going to see more and more that fractures our society and culture.

We may react by blaming big tech—and yes, they're making decisions not necessarily in our best interest. However, my resolution this 2022 is to stop my scroll on goodness because I want my algorithm to be goodness.

St. Monica parish and schools strive to build an algorithm of welcome, peace, hope and belonging. Your presence and engagement in this community are vital in strengthening that formula. At the dismissal at Mass, the Priest or Deacon says, "Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life." Thank you for taking that invitation to heart. Thank you for being a loving disciple who goes out to transform the world.

This year has been astounding because of your generous support. May grace and blessings continue to pour into our feeds this 2022!
