Outstanding Serving Hand

Outstanding Serving Hand
Coach Miguel, Leland, and his volleyball coach, Coach Kay.

Last week I was blind-copied with many other parents on an email from Coach Miguel asking us to be present for a sports award banquet because our "son or daughter" would be receiving an award. I thought it was a mistake—but when I double-checked in person, Coach confirmed.

To be honest, I generally have been the person who scoffs at the "every kid gets a trophy" culture. Sometimes it can be cringe-worthy for grown-ups to come up with something affirming and encouraging if it's not genuine. So when Coach Kay began describing an award for volleyball, I was holding my breath.

"I've just seen this athlete excel in volleyball. When we drill, he's always the first one to successfully complete his 20 serves. He is consistent and helped us win our final game. The award for Outstanding Serving Hand goes to Leland Siebenaler." He ran down the bleachers, and I've never seen him stand taller. When we took his picture, I didn't have to ask him to smile. Okay, Lord, I get it now.

Acknowledging people is not only a crucial aspect of stewardship but also an essential opportunity to show gratitude towards the people who make a meaningful impact on the parish. It's not just a nice thing to do; it is a vital part of stewardship that helps to cultivate meaningful relationships and keep them engaged with the mission of St. Monica: to form loving disciples who will transform the world.

There are thousands of outstanding serving hands at St. Monica—whether in worship and sacraments, outreach, community life, or simply prayer. And while we don't have a plaque for each of you, there's always room for more gratitude—so thank you!
